School of Nursing, G.B Pant Hospital is Government Institution under Directorate of Health Services Andaman and Nicobar Administration imparting 03 years course of General Nursing and midwifery for both male and female candidates. The School was established in the year 2001. And it is attached to the G B Pant Hospital functioning in its old O.P.D complex premises. Initially the School of Nursing was under the Financial Assistance of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under centrally Sponsored Scheme i.e. “Opening of new Nursing Schools in States/UT’s”. As per the Pattern of Assistance the financial assistance was given by the Ministry for the first five years and thereafter the liabilities of the School were taken over by the UT Administration i.e. Andaman and Nicobar Administration.

The School of Nursing is recognized by Indian Nursing Council (INC). Examinations are conducted by Board of Nursing Education of Nurses League of CMAI Bengaluru. The Tamil Nadu Nurses & Midwives Council (TNNMC) is the authority for issuing registration to the successful candidate. Time to time inspections was conducted by INC, TNNMC and Board of Nursing Education CMAI.

Since establishment of the school i.e. in the year 2001 the annual intake of students was 20.  Since 2020, as per approval by GOI, 10% reservation to EWS (Economically Weaker Section) by allotting 02 seats under the Quota vide GOI, MHRD (OM) Letter No 12-4/2019-01 dated 17.01.2019 and MHFW (Nursing section) letter No. A.11013/01/2019-N dated 28.01.2019. So present intake is 22 students The selection of candidates is merit based and as per Category as directed by Administration, applicants are called for counseling & selection. Preference is given to Science stream students as per the INC norms.

Issues and constrains:  

Regular appointment of Principal and Vice Principal, to be filled by Nursing personnel as per the norms of INC for School of Nursing, is not met as the RR of their post are not yet finalized. Among six sanctioned post of tutors, 03(three) to be filled on regular basis (instead of 11 months contract).

 

Future Plan:

It is proposed to upgrade present School of Nursing to college of Nursing to start 04 years B.Sc. Nursing course with an annual intake of 40 students. For this, measures are to be taken to recruit additional faculties and development of infrastructure to meet the norms laid down by INC.
