National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP)
National Leprosy Eradication Programme has been
implemented with major objectives of reducing the disease burden, preventing
disabilities and to create awareness among masses about leprosy through
vertical programme during 1975. This
programme has been launched in A& N Islands with 05 SET’s Centre's and 01
ULC during 1975. During 1991 a new scheme namely “Multi Drug Therapy Scheme”
has been introduced with the opening of 10 SETs and due to MDT and concerted
efforts of vertical staffs posted at 10 SETs (Survey, Education and Treatment
centre) achieved the elimination level
during 2005 i.e below 1 per 10000
populations. Now the achieved level of elimination has to be maintained by
the General Health Care (GHC) staffs.
