National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP)

National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) is an umbrella programme for prevention & control of vector borne diseases. Earlier the vector borne diseases were managed under separate National Health Programmes, but now NVBDCP covers all six-vector borne disease namely:

1.     Malaria

2.      Dengue

3.     Chikungunya

4.      Filaria (Lymphatic Filariasis)

5.     Japanese Encephalitis

6.      Kala-Azar

**** No case of Kala-Azar and Japanese Encephalitis has been reported from any part of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

NVBDCP Regular Activities

        Active Surveillance carried out village level throughout the Islands for early case detection and prompt treatment.

        Passive surveillance earned out District Hospital, CHC’s/PHC’s/Sub Centre/H&WC s for early case detection and prompt treatment.

        Mass & Contact Survey done all positive cases.

        Health Education & IEC activities carried out house to house by the NVBDCP staff.

Anti-Larval and Anti-Adult Measures:

        Chemical Control - Use Larvicide for anti-larval activities carried out weekly

        Biological control - Release Gambusia Fishes in ornamental ponds, unused well and other water bodies.

        Source Reduction - Permanent & Temporary sources of mosquitoes breeding place are eliminated by filling of burrow pits, ditches, small irrigation canal and unused well.

        All Sub Centre (FTD) ZH&WC done RDT tested for Malaria and taken blood smear.

        Malaria Microscopic test available at all DH’s/CHC’s/PHC’s.

        Entomological Surveillance throughout the UT.

Elimination of Malaria

        The Govt, of India has declared framework to interrupt indigenous transmission throughout the country by 2027 and malaria elimination by 2030.

        To reduce the incidence of malaria to less than 01 case per 1000 population per year - by 2024.

        Prevent re-establish of local transmission of malaria in areas where it has been eliminated - by 2030.

Dengue & Chikungunya Special Activities

        Rapid Response team for Dengue & Chikungunya control constituted.

        The domestic & peri domestic breeding places are identified and destroyed.

        Anti larval & Anti adult measures carried out all positive cases.

        Health Education & TEC activities house to house carried out by the NVBDCP staff.

       If a dengue positive case is detected, then the Indoor Pyrethrum Spray of the houses within 100 mtrs. are covered. More focus given to source reduction within indoors.

Lymphatic Filariasis

      Night Filaria Survey of Random site & Sentinel site carried out at Nicobar District. No positive case found during the survey.

      Pre TAS activities completed at Nicobar District.

      TAS - II (Transmission Assessment Survey) Nov’ 2024 successfully completed at Nicobar District.

Kala-Azar& Japanese Encephalitis

             No case of Kala-Azar and Japanese Encephalitis has been reported from any part of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.


Special Activities

      Engaged 15 Nos. Casual Unskilled Mazdoor for Source Reduction Activities at North & Middle Andaman District from July 2024.

      Engaged 35 Nos. Casual Unskilled Mazdoor for Source Reduction Activities at South Andaman District from July 2024.

      Engaged 25 Nos. Casual Unskilled Mazdoor for Indoor Residual Spray and Source Reduction Activities at Nicobar District from July 2024.

      NVBDCP staff along with the Health Educator conducted house-to-house IEC/BCC activities and distributed pamphlets.

      Entomological survey conducted in Nicobar District in Oct 2024.

      Entomological survey is being conducted in North and Middle Andaman District from Dec 2024.

Training

      One day training under Malaria and other Vector Control Response (MVCR) for Surveillance Workers and Insect Collectors was held on 02.12.2024.

      One day training under Malaria and other Vector Control Response (MVCR) for District Malaria Officer. Assistant Malaria Officer and Malaria Inspector was held on 16.12.2024.

      Two days training programme under NVBDCP for Medical Officers.

      One day training programme under NVBDCP at all three districts for paramedical workers.

      Mass Screening of Malaria at Nicobar District.

      Distribution of MMD kits for Filaria patients.

      Post TAS survey in Nicobar district which has passed TAS - II in Dec 2024.

      Post Validation Survey in two districts which has passed TAS - III.
